Assignment 1

Hello...this is the beginning of my first assignment. Today we are all bombarded by the media in its various shapes and forms. I have many opinions on lots of movies, books, shows, and the like. Here are just a few of them:

As far as movies go, I'm pretty open to most things. I really enjoyed the movie The Dark Knight for many reasons. It was very fast-paced and interesting and it examined the human condition in a way many movie writers tend to avoid. It looked at the concept of normal everyday people killing and being killed and just how crazy and savage "good" people can be when pressed and provoked.
Another movie I like is National Treasure (The first one...the second one is pretty much the same as the first one, unfortunately) because it is clever and exciting and makes you think. It's also really interesting with its references to history.
The Pink Panther is another one of my favourites. It is basically hilarious and is a good movie to watch when you really don't want to think at all and just want a really ridiculous movie to watch for a good laugh.
Action/Suspense movies are my favourite. I also like Flightplan, Firewall, 16 Blocks, Executive Decision, and many more.
I also really like musicals like Phantom of the Opera and Sound of Music because I am a musician and have grown up in a musical family. Also, the people in musicals usually actually have musical talent, unlike a lot of popular artists today...but we'll get to that.
I can't stand horror movies. They freak me out and really have no point other than to scare people. They usually don't have a very interesting plot. I don't mind a little bit of creepiness but not to the extremes that horror movies take it.

I love to read...I read all the time and I always have a book on the go - sometimes more than one. I would say my taste in books is similar to my taste in movies. I like books that are full of suspense and action and keep me guessing. I enjoy reading because in a book, unlike in a movie, the story stays with you, and you can imagine what's happening, rather than have someone squash your creativity. My absolute favourite author is Ted Dekker. He is a Christian author (which I like because I am Christian) that writes a lot of strange, crazy books that are absolutely amazing.
One of my favourite books is Obsessed by Ted Dekker. I like this book because it is intriguing and I could not at all figure out what was going to happen. It has a lot of references to World War II and intense plot twists.
An amazing Trilogy by Ted Dekker is the Circle Trilogy. The three books are Black, Red, and White. I really enjoyed these books because they were fast-paced and exciting. They took new concepts and applied them to old ideas. These books really kept me thinking, and I wasn't sure what the ending would be like.
I really like the Lord of the Rings trilogy... who doesn't? It's funny and the writing is very good and it's a clever plot.

While I enjoy reading, I do not like magazines. I very rarely read magazines, and when I do, it's because there's pretty much nothing else to do. I don't mind flipping through a magazine and looking at the pictures, but I don't usually read articles.

Okay...on to music. Well...
I've got to say, I'm pretty opinionated when it comes to music, but here we go...

As I've already stated, I like musicals and songs from musical theatre because it is nice to sing and listen to.
I really don't have much of an opinion of many popular artists because I don't listen to a great deal of that kind of music and I really can't think of many specific examples.
I like Baroque music because it usually has a lot of interesting parts and resolves the way it's supposed to.
I like classical music because it's nice to sing/play and many of the composers were very talented in what they wrote.
I like romantic period music because it is usually very beautiful and flowing and nice to listen to and slightly easier to play/sing than baroque and classical music.
One of my favourite Composers is Gabriel Fauré who is a French romantic period composer. Every one of his pieces is beautiful. I also enjoyed performing a requiem by Fauré with my choir.
I enjoy a lot of pieces written by Bach also. I play some of his two-part inventions and will probably soon learn a few sinfonias or fugues or something of the sort. I know, non-classical musicians will be confused by all of this, so I'd better stop there
I do like some contemporary/popular artists. I like Mika because all of his songs are happy and fun and he has a crazy-awesome falsetto. I also like Imogen Heap because her songs are interesting and she plays piano for herself, which I think is pretty sweet.

I pretty much don't read the newspaper. I sometimes have wont to do some of the crosswords and word games and read the comics, but I really don't read the newspaper.

I have some T.V. shows that I really enjoy as well. I really like the show Prison Break because it is really exciting and suspenseful and there's always crazy plot twists so I never know what's going to happen. Another show I like is Monk because it's really funny and extremely quirky and very unique. Probably my favourite T.V. show is a show called Psych because it's hilarious and the main character's personality is pretty awesome.

So that's my media me...
until the next assignment..
